Traveling the country and lost in a fog of hazy IPAs? Desperately seeking a West Coast oasis thousands of miles from the Pacific coastline? We know the feeling, and we got you. Look no further than Kansas City and, should you find yourself there, go visit our good friends Nick and Tania Mader at their brewery Alma Mader Brewing. Squeezed between Boulevard Brewing’s campus and the Kansas/Missouri line, these folks churn out some of the finest WC IPAs and hoppy lagers to be found anywhere. They recently celebrated their 7th anniversary and asked if we would brew a beer with them to celebrate, and The Pursuit is that collaboration.
The Pursuit is a reimagined version of Pacific Portal, their award-winning flagship IPA. We took the bones of that recipe, stripped it down to its essentials then built it back up using some Breakside techniques, hops, and flair. Midwest soul and West Coast body? Maybe. Alma Mader may be in KC, but the SoCal and the Pacific Northwest are in their DNA, so, in reality, this is more like West Coast IPA, double refracted first through a midwest lens and then back through an Oregonian one. It is light on the palate but saturated with modern hop flavor featuring Washington-grown Citra and Simcoe, Strata and Mosaic Cryo from Oregon, and classic Mosaic pellets from Idaho’s Treasure Valley.
