Pacific NW India Pale Ale
It’s our 16th anniversary! Sweet Sixteen! Old enough to drive! We know, we know….the only birthdays that really matter end in 5s and 0s, but we’ll take any excuse we can to get together with friends and brew a celebratory beer.
For our 16th anniversary, the first of two IPAs we’re releasing is UNPLUGGED, made with our friends at Fremont Brewing in Seattle. We’ve known both the “Fremont Matts” ever since Breakside was a little baby brewery, and they have been supporters and boosters of us since the early days. It had been a few years since we made a beer together, so we figured now was a great time to get the SEA-PDX band back together.
Unplugged, with versions made at both breweries, is a modern take on a classic Northwest IPA. California likes to hog the spotlight when it comes to telling the story of IPA on the Pacific Coast, so PNW IPA doesn’t always get the love it deserves. Sure, some older iterations were malty and baggy. Yes, the versions that we made in 2009 wouldn’t be considered flashy by today’s standards, but who cares?! We’re not making that beer. Unplugged takes some of the most beloved elements of old school NW IPA — the Chinook and Columbus, a dash of characterful malt, and the salt and bitterness that makes rain-soaked urbanites and gritty longshoremen swoon — and marries them with contemporary hop products and techniques to create a beer saturated with hop intensity and wonderfully bright all at once.
Thanks to our friends in Seattle for teaming up with us again to celebrate our history and venerate the flavors that make the Northwest unique.
