Who doesn’t remember their first visit to John’s Market? For any beer lover in the PNW, going to John’s has been a rite of passage for the last 25 years. The aisles, teeming with hard-to-find imports and new releases from off-the-radar microbrewer- ies, have long been a treasure trove for anyone looking to taste their way towards encyclopedic beer knowledge.
We first brewed this beer to celebrate their 25th anniversary in 2024. It was such a hit that we brought it back. It’s our take on a Northwest classic: the Pacific Northwest winter IPA. Think back to beers like Wreck the Halls (shoutout to John Harris!), Brrr…, Snow Cap and other legendary beers of the past. These beers were packed with citrus and pine, alcohol warmth, and a stiff caramel malt back-bone, like an altbier and a double IPA had spawned a 7% offspring. Our version hews closely to that tradition while adding in some modern twists: the caramel malt flavor is restrained leaving the hops to express more of their fruit complexity, and we’ve leaned into a slew of recently released hops and Cryo pellets to lengthen the flavor. We think this beer captures the zeitgeist of John’s first quarter century while still keeping one foot firmly in the next twenty-five years of beer.
